Photoshop Tutorials : Reflection
This is a quick tutorial on how to create a water reflection of an image. We will start with an image that has been cut out using the quick mask technique.
1. Create a new image make it whatever size you want, but it needs to have a height that is larger than the origional cutout in order to have room for the reflection.
2. Paste your cutout into the document, and align it as desired. Be sure to leave room at the bottom to add the reflection. Name this layer "cutout"
3. Fill the background with white. Next create a new layer and select the linear gradient tool. Open the gradient picker, and choos "foreground to transparent". Choose a light gray foreground color. Now create a gradient from the bottom of the image to the bottom of your cutout (hold down shift while doing this to keep the gradient perfectly horizontal)
4. Copy the cutout layer, and edit>transform>flip verticle. Now (holding shift to keep the image in line) drag the image so that the top lines up with the bottom of the origional image. Now drag the cutout copy layer below the cutout layer in the layers pallette.
5. Now with the cutout copy layer selected use the filter>distort>ripple effect.
6. Next select the bottom area of the document using the marquee tool starting at the base of the cutout layer. In a new layer use the "foreground to transparent" gradient tool again and move from the top of your selection to the bottom. Place this layer below the "cutout copy" layer, and name it "gradient layer".
7. Now constrain the cutout copy layer to the new "gradient layer". (in the layers pallette hold alt and click the line between the "cutout copy" layer and the "gradient layer")
8. CTRL click the "cutout copy" layer to auto select it. Then click select>inverse.
9. With the "gradient layer" selected. Press delete to remove the gradient that is outside of you "cutout copy" image.
You should end up with an image that looks similar to this.
